Why using a serum is important.

Facial serums can be confusing to say the least. Many wonder what exactly a serum does for your skin as well as what benefit they have in comparison to the other products we use every day. If you haven't already added a serum to your routine, we at Whelehans will help you understand why they are worth considering.
Why use a serum?
Your regular moisturiser typically contains an array of antioxidants and cell renewal boosters, but you can expect much more from a serum. Why?
While moisturisers do generally boast an impressive collection of ingredients, they also contain emollients and thickeners which is what creates a lotion or rich cream like texture. Unfortunately the addition of these emollients makes less room for the antioxidants and anti-ageing ingredients thus making them less effective. This is how serums differ from moisturisers. While our skin does need these emollients to soften and keep the skin hydrated, serums contain next to no emollients or thickeners and instead use the extra space to pack in more beneficial ingredients or antioxidants than your usual moisturiser.
A serum isn't intended to replace your day or night moisturiser, but instead to be used before your moisturiser. Using a serum before your moisturiser allows the antioxidants and anti-ageing ingredients to penetrate deep into the skin while using a moisturiser will intensify the antioxidants or anti-ageing benefits while moisturising and hydrating the skin.
