What does a hearing test involve?

Eamonn Brady is a pharmacist and the owner of Whelehans Pharmacies, Pearse St and Clonmore, Mullingar. If you have any health questions e-mail them to info@whelehans.ie

A hearing test is a quick and painless way of determining if you have a hearing loss. Whelehans offer free weekly hearing tests with a qualified Audiologist from Blackberry Hearing.  Correct hearing tests provides a full knowledge and understanding of your hearing loss. A hearing test is performed by a hearing specialist called an audiologist. A brief case history followed by an examination of the ear canal through a video otoscope determines if it is safe to proceed with the test. These steps check for possible undiagnosed medical conditions, obstructions, ear wax or other conditions that may require onward referral to a doctor.

The hearing test is a two-part test. The first part of the test involves pure tones being presented via headphones at different intensities and frequencies. The purpose of this exercise is to find the faintest sound at each frequency which is plotted on a chart called an Audiogram. This allows the specialists to compare to the results with the average normal hearing range. The second part involves a bone conduction test which will establish the type of hearing loss present.

After your test

The results of the hearing test enable the specialist to determine the type and degree of hearing loss present, if any, and will then advise you to whether it can be treated medically or if hearing appliances are required. The specialist will also explain your full rights and any entitlements that may be available to you. Hearing tests are available free of charge in Whelahans weekly by a qualified Blackberry Hearing audiologist. If you or your loved one has hearing concerns call the friendly team at our Blackberry Hearing HQ on 01-6978470 to book in for a free hearing consultation. PRSI Grant of €1,000 available on a pair of hearing aids.
