Problems caused by excess ear wax and how removal using microsuction can remedy them

Posted by Eamonn Brady on

Excess wax in the ears can sometimes lead to various problems and discomfort.

Potential problems caused by excess ear wax

  1. Impacted earwax: When wax accumulates in the ear canal, it may become hard and impacted, causing a blockage. This can lead to symptoms like earache, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear.

  1. Temporary hearing loss: Excessive earwax can obstruct the ear canal, which can result in temporary hearing loss. This can make it difficult to hear sounds and communicate clearly.

  1. Ear infections: Wax can create a favourable environment for bacteria or fungi to flourish, potentially leading to ear infections. Symptoms may include ear pain, itching, discharge, and reduced hearing.

  1. Tinnitus: Excessive earwax can stimulate the auditory nerve, leading to the perception of continuous or intermittent ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in the ears, known as tinnitus.

  1. Vertigo or dizziness: Rarely, a buildup of earwax can affect the balance organs in the inner ear, causing feelings of dizziness or vertigo.

Remedy any or all of these issues - use the Ear Wax Removal Service at Whelehans Pharmacy

Whelehans Pharmacy Pearse St offer non-invasive ear wax removal technology developed by Tympa® Health using a device called a TympaScope® to remove ear wax. Whelehans ear wax removal service is performed by an experienced nurse trained in ear wax removal.

How our ear wax removal service works?

Once the ear canal is assessed, the TympaScope® is used to introduce warm water or a saline solution into the ear canal. This helps soften the wax and make it easier to remove.

After the wax has been softened, a gentle suction or vacuum is used to collect the softened wax, which is then safely removed from the ear. The suction is typically very gentle to prevent any discomfort.

Preparation

We advise using ear wax softening drops for 5 days before your ear wax removal appointment to allow easier ear wax removal at your appointment. Whelehans Pharmacy staff (Pearse St or Clonmore) will advise on the best ear wax softening drops to use.

How much does ear wax removal cost?

Initial ear check is €20, and this is refundable if ear wax is present. Tympa Earwax removal costs €50 for 1 ear, €75 for both ears at Whelehans Pharmacy
