Tips on applying and choosing a fragrance to suit you

Posted by Ann McNelis on

Before choosing a fragrance that is right for you, it is important to understand the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum. Eau de parfum contains a higher content of essential oils and denatured ethyl alcohol therefore it lasts longer, usually up to 4 hours. Eau de toilette lasts up to 2 hours. Decide on whether you want a rich and spicy, floral, sweet floral or fresh scent, depending if it’s for daytime or night-time use.

Layering your fragrance

Layering would consist of using other products with the same scent e.g. shower gel, body lotion, deodorants in addition to using your fragrance. This builds up the scent making it last longer. Another tip is to apply perfume right after you shower or bath since pores tend to open up and the scent is more easily absorbed.

How to apply your perfume

Firstly, apply fragrance to your pulse points; these are the wrist, crook of the elbow, behind the ear lobes and neck. Your skin gives off more heat at these areas because the underlying blood vessels are closest to the skin at these points. Spray or dab lightly making sure not to rub the wrists as this will compress the scent and won’t allow the scent to develop naturally. For your fragrance to last longer, spray into the air then step into it; this helps to distribute the scent over your entire body. Sometimes scents evaporate quickly; this may be because your skin is dry and since perfume contains alcohol it also evaporates very quickly. Remember, the trick to applying perfume is quality not quantity. The longer your perfume lasts when you wear it, the less you will have to reapply.

New Year Skin Resolution

Posted by Lorraine Murphy on

Is it that time of year again? Another New Year and we are all lined up with New Year resolutions. So why not make one of those promise to your skin!

After all the late nights, eating and drinking too much, our skin has taken the brunt of our excesses.

By committing to a daily and regular skin care regime, you are taking years off the appearance of your skin in the future.

Every day start by cleansing, toning and moisturising both your skin and the important eye area. A good cleanser that suits your skin type is vital. If it is not correct it could cause more problems; if it is too astringent, it could cause even more dryness in dry skin. On the other side if you have oily skin and your moisturiser is too rich, this will cause problems like blocked pores and excess oil on the skin and blackheads. Get into a good habit by using an exfoliating wash and mask once a week.

If you really want to keep the signs of ageing at bay, use an eye cream day and night. The tissue around the eye area is particularly fragile and must be treated with extra care. This area is the first area to show signs of ageing and the sooner you start using an eye cream, the better the results.

At Whelehans Pharmacy we have a wide range of products available. Why not call in and  talk to one of our expert skin consultants about your individual needs?

Mature Skin

Posted by Tamara Keena on

Our skin naturally gets drier and begins to sag as we get older. As well as the signs of ageing, additional factors such as exposure to sun and smoking cause fine lines, freckles and age spots. The temptation is to apply a heavy foundation to cover these imperfections. However, a thick, matte foundation exacerbates dryness and wrinkles.

You can bring out the best in mature skin by using three products, including concealer, light reflecting foundation and an oil free loose powder to enhance your features.

It is best to start with a concealer for trouble spots like under the eyes or for hyperpigmentation. This concealer will cover up redness, broken capillaries, dark circles and sun damage. A light reflecting foundation like Elizabeth Arden Perfectly Satin Foundation (€38 at Whelehans) has amazing effects. Using a sponge, blend carefully along the hair and jaw line to ensure an even and flawless finish. Elizabeth Arden Perfectly Satin Foundation has light reflectors to illuminate your skin and to soften the look of fine lines. If you suffer from dry skin, use a moisturising foundation such as Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Foundation (€45 at Whelehans).  Finally, dust on loose powder with a large powder brush for light coverage; Elizabeth Arden Ceremide Powder (€38 at Whelehans) is a great option. The result will be a healthy and glowing look.
