Tips on applying and choosing a fragrance to suit you

Posted by Ann McNelis on

Before choosing a fragrance that is right for you, it is important to understand the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum. Eau de parfum contains a higher content of essential oils and denatured ethyl alcohol therefore it lasts longer, usually up to 4 hours. Eau de toilette lasts up to 2 hours. Decide on whether you want a rich and spicy, floral, sweet floral or fresh scent, depending if it’s for daytime or night-time use.

Layering your fragrance

Layering would consist of using other products with the same scent e.g. shower gel, body lotion, deodorants in addition to using your fragrance. This builds up the scent making it last longer. Another tip is to apply perfume right after you shower or bath since pores tend to open up and the scent is more easily absorbed.

How to apply your perfume

Firstly, apply fragrance to your pulse points; these are the wrist, crook of the elbow, behind the ear lobes and neck. Your skin gives off more heat at these areas because the underlying blood vessels are closest to the skin at these points. Spray or dab lightly making sure not to rub the wrists as this will compress the scent and won’t allow the scent to develop naturally. For your fragrance to last longer, spray into the air then step into it; this helps to distribute the scent over your entire body. Sometimes scents evaporate quickly; this may be because your skin is dry and since perfume contains alcohol it also evaporates very quickly. Remember, the trick to applying perfume is quality not quantity. The longer your perfume lasts when you wear it, the less you will have to reapply.
