Why choose an independent pharmacy over a franchise or "label" pharmacy? ...... it's all about YOU

Why Choose an Independent Pharmacy in Ireland Over a Company or Franchise Pharmacy?

Independent pharmacies like Whelehan’s (like many independent stores in all areas of our high streets) are becoming fewer and fewer in Ireland as bigger companies and franchises (there are three or four large pharmacy franchise chains) now dominating the Irish pharmacy market. While company and franchise pharmacies offer advantages and many offer the same advantages I describe below for independents; likewise, there are independent pharmacies that will not offer all of the benefits below either; so, this is in no way trying to criticise bigger chains etc. And bear in mind, many franchises are owned by local single operated pharmacists.

But as an owner of two independent pharmacies myself, I thought it only right to argue some of the benefits of independently run pharmacies as projections show that there will not be many independent pharmacies left in Ireland in 10 plus years’ time.

Why the name Whelehan’s?

I bought Whelehan’s Pharmacy Pearse St in 2005 (when the banks were lending money easier during the Celtic Tiger), I had been working there as the pharmacist since 2002. I am often asked, why did I not re-name it “Bradys Pharmacy”, considering my name is Eamonn Brady. The reason I kept the name Whelehan’s is that Whelehan’s Pearse St has operated under the name Whelehan’s at the same location since it opened in 1898, so I wanted to keep that bit of tradition. Plus, it’s been called Whelehan’s for so long, if I had changed the name to Bradys, I’d be confident a lot of people would still call it Whelehan’s. One of the beauties of Whelehan’s Pearse St is that we often have many generations of the same families using Whelehan’s over the years; with some able to explain (and have proof) that their families have been using Whelehan’s for over 100 years. If anyone is interested in history, I have much of the history of Whelehan’s archived so simply email me at info@Whelehan’s.ie and I will email over to you.

Advantages of independent pharmacies

Below are what we stride for at Whelehan’s (Pearse St and Clonmore) and there is evidence that independent pharmacies can have the advantages below over bigger chains.

Personalised Customer Service

Independent pharmacists build strong relationships with their customers, often recognising them by name and understanding their medical history. This personalised approach ensures tailored advice and better healthcare support, which is harder to find in larger, busier chain pharmacies.

Community-Centred Approach

Unlike corporate pharmacies driven by profit margins, independent pharmacies focus on community well-being. They often engage in local events, support charities, and provide specialised health services based on the specific needs of the area.

Faster and More Flexible Service

Without the bureaucratic restrictions of large franchises, independent pharmacists can make quicker decisions, offer bespoke solutions, and adjust services to meet customer needs. This includes sourcing rare medications, offering longer consultation times etc

Additional Whelehan’s Services

For Whelehan’s (mainly Pearse St), additional services we offer include blister packing, free home delivery, flu and covid vaccines, beauty services (nails etc with Caroline and Shelly from Essence of Beauty), chiropody, audiologist (free Hearing tests), free compression stocking fitting service, ear wax removal, chartered physiotherapist, free HSE smoking cessation product scheme, app to offer cheaper test strips and lancets for pregnant women with Gestational Diabetes,  massage,  reflexology and more. These were all services we were able to introduce without having to run by like of head offices etc. All are busy as they fulfil needs people require.

Competitive Pricing and Unique Product Selection

Contrary to the belief that large chains offer the best prices, many independent pharmacies provide competitive pricing, loyalty discounts, and access to niche products that may not be available in larger stores. Their flexibility allows them to stock specialty items and locally sourced health products. For example, Whelehan’s have our own energy tonic and cough mixture which sell well.

Expert Advice Without Sales Pressure

Corporate pharmacies often push staff to meet sales targets, sometimes prioritising commercial interests over customer needs. Independent pharmacists, however, focus on professional ethics and patient care, ensuring customers receive the best medical advice rather than being upsold unnecessary products.

Supporting Local Business

Choosing an independent pharmacy helps sustain local employment, keeps money within the community, and preserves the unique character of Irish towns and villages.

Independent pharmacies can offer a more personalised, community-focused, and patient-driven service, making them a great choice over larger corporate or franchise alternatives.

Note: Please bear in mind, above is no criticism of chains, most pharmacy chains are great at what they do (I worked for pharmacy chain s in the past); it’s just that we don’t want to lose all our independents.
