What is Reflexology?

Posted by Eamonn Brady on

Reflexology is an ancient healing technique, dating back to 2330BC, which works alongside orthodox medicine, whereby pressure is applied to specific points (reflex points) on the feet. These points correspond to all major organs, glands and body parts. It is believed that by stimulating these reflex points it activates the body’s own innate healing power to bring about a rebalancing of the systems.

The feet have over 10000 nerve endings, so when they are stimulated through touch this sends a calming message from the peripheral nerves in the feet to the central nervous system which in turn signals the body to adjust tension levels.

The Benefits
Some of the ailments reflexology may help include; Parkinson's, MS, sciatica, migraine, asthma, bronchitis, stomach ulcers, colitis, constipation, IBS, colic, reflux, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, sarcoidosis PMS, PCOS, painful periods, endometriosis, infertility, menopausal symptoms, insomnia, anxiety and depression.

The Research
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth have found that people felt about 40% less pain, and were able to stand pain for about 45% longer, when they used reflexology as a method of pain relief.
The results suggested that reflexology could be used to complement conventional drug therapy in the treatment of conditions associated with pain such as osteoarthritis, backache and cancers.
"It is likely that reflexology works in a similar manner to acupuncture by causing the brain to release chemicals that lessen pain signals."
