Slowing down skin aging
Protect your skin from the sun
Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays are the main cause of skin ageing and skin cancer. Sunburn massively increases the risk of skin cancer, so protect your skin against sun damage at any age, but take special care with babies, children and young people.
To reduce aging and damage from the sun:
- spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm
- cover up with clothes, a hat and sunglasses
- use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30
It is good however to spend some time in sunlight, so your body can make vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones.
Smoking causes early ageing of the skin. Smoking reduces the skin's natural elasticity by causing the breakdown of collagen and reducing collagen production. Collagen is a protein that supports skin strength. Smoking also reduces blood flow to the skin, so skin gets fewer nutrients and less oxygen which increases ageing.
Alcohol causes your body and skin to become dehydrated, leaving the skin looking older and tired. Drinking water can help your skin stay hydrated, preventing it drying out. When you have alcohol, try to drink within the recommended limits and have a non-alcoholic drink, such as water or fruit juice, between alcoholic drinks.
Washing your Skin
Try to use mild soaps or bath oils. Too much washing or using harsh soaps can wash away the natural oils that keep our skin healthy. If you have dry skin, do not use harsh alcohol-based products as these can irritate skin and dry it out. Moisturising can help prevent dry skin. If you have oily skin, avoid oil-based products and choose water-based ones instead.
These help reduce sagging skin and wrinkles, tone facial muscles, improve blood circulation, stimulate collagen production and restore elasticity resulting in tighter, smoother skin. There are videos on YouTube on simple facial exercises. Whelehans stock a facial exercise guidance booklet called “How to Age Gracefully” written by a Mullingar based Doctor Susan Gravenir in the form of a simple step by step facial exercise guide. It costs €5 at Whelehans or free if you purchase two Lillysan® products (see below).

The Lillysan® Skincare range naturally restores youth to your skin. Lillysan® creams and serums restore moisture and collagen in the deepest layers of your skin helping reduce wrinkles and fine lines in a matter of days.
Bottom of FormLillysan® Serum is made with Hyaluronic Acid. The serum reduces fine lines around the eyes and lips. It works dramatically on smokers’ lines. Apply the serum twice a day after cleansing your skin. Since Hyaluronic Acid attracts up to 1000 times its weight in water, there will be a visible plumping effect, literally erasing all fine lines. Results can be seen within ten days of use.
