This is the first of two articles in the Westmeath Examiner on alcohol’s link to mental health problems. Alcohol can be described as both a tonic and a poison. The difference between “tonic and poison” lies in the dose. Part of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) mantra is that there is “no problem that alcohol cannot make worse.” Of the problems that alcohol can cause or worsen, mental illness is one of the most frequent, serious, and frequently underdiagnosed.

Gingivitis (Gum Disease)

Gingivitis is more commonly called gum disease and is caused by a build-up of bacteria in the gums. It causes gum irritation, red swollen gums, and bleeding. Gingivitis can be mild and many are not aware they have the condition and only get treatment when it is too late (ie) gum and dental damage is evident.

Gum disease can have a detrimental effect on your overall health. Gum disease is associated with more risk of heart attack, stroke and lung disease. In women, it is linked to premature birth or low birth weight babies. It is not fully understood why.

What is Autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviour.

Whilst on its own, autism is not a learning disability or a mental health problem,some people with autism will have an accompanying learning disability, learning difficulty or mental health problem. Globally, autism occurs in 1-2 per 1000 people, with males five times more likely to be affected than females. It is suspected that the number of adults living with the condition is vastly underestimated
