People with migraine are often told to avoid chocolate, cheese and red wine as these are known triggers for migraines. These foods may not be the biggest cause or trigger for migraines for many, but they have an influence for some people living with migraine.

Is this only a myth?

Some consider the influence of the likes of chocolate, cheese and red wine on migraine to be a myth. However studies indicate that a type of amino acid called tyramine in these foods is a potential trigger for migraines for some people

A vegan diet may not be a healthy diet

There are a number of studies which indicate that a vegan diet is very high in vitamin C, fibre and low in saturated fat as previously discussed. When we hear the term vegan, we automatically think heathy as a number of individuals claim to have increased health benefits and weight loss from following a vegan diet. Even if a food is marketed as vegan you must still read food labels; this will indicate the amount of fat, sugar and salt present in the food

Being a vegan is primarily down to a person’s ethic beliefs; many vegans feel very strongly that eating, wearing or using any animal product is morally wrong. A Vegan doesn’t eat any food which comes from an animal including eggs, dairy products, seafood and meat.

Are sugars in fruits processed by the body in the same way as refined sugar? The answer is no. The majority of carbohydrates are broken down to glucose in the body which I discussed in my article on the Glycemic Index (Ask in Whelehans for a copy of this article). Refined sugar or table sugar (sucrose) is made up of fructose and glucose (two simple sugars); the sugars in fruit are dependent on the particular fruit

Most of us know the benefits of fruits; they contain essential vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and fibre. Fruit is advertised as a super healthy food and eating at least 2-3 portions a day is encouraged. However the type of fruit you select is important as many varieties can be very high in sugar.  The sugar in fruit is natural (fructose is the main sugar in fruit), but too much sugar regardless of the source can have negative effects.
