Successful Mullingar Asthma event raises awareness of increasingly common condition

Respiratory Nurse Avril Gannon from Tullamore Hospital held a successful asthma awareness day at Whelehans Pharmacy, Pearse St, Mullingar on Friday September 14th. An aim of the event was to identify people who suspected they had asthma and or other respiratory conditions like COPD (bronchitis) and advise them on best course of action. For people already living with Asthma or other respiratory conditions, Avril checked if they were getting the best from their inhalers and other medicines. Where people are identified as having poor asthma control they were advised to attend the appropriate health care professional.

The event was booked out with dozens of people attending the clinic. Another Asthma Day will be held at Whelehans in the coming months; keep an eye on local media and social media for details. The event was sponsored by GSK, The Asthma Society of Ireland and Whelehans Pharmacy.

Asthma is a long-term condition that can cause a cough, wheezing and breathlessness. In Ireland, respiratory diseases are the third most common long-term illness group after cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases.
