Ear Wax Removal

Our next Ear Wax Removal Clinic at Whelehans Pearse St is Monday May 17th; call Blackberry Hearing at 01 6978470 to book. Our Ear Wax Removal Clinic is run by Audiologist Rian from Blackberry Hearing. It works by Microsuction which involves cleaning the ears using a small instrument that sucks loosened wax from your ear.

Traditional Ear Wax Removal

Often ear wax can build up within the ear, in most cases the earwax loosens and falls out on its own. In some cases, the earwax can build up causing blockage within the ear. Traditionally removing earwax involves ear irrigation or commonly known as syringing the ears. This practice is performed by a GP. Syringing the ears involves the GP flushing out the hardened wax with warm water in order loosen and remove the wax. Not all GP’s practice ear syringing. Whelehans offer a new non-invasive therapy called Microsuction to remove wax.

Causes of Ear wax Build Up:

  • Some people produce more wax in their ears – some people do naturally.
  • Some people have narrow canals (the tubes that link the eardrum and outer ear).
  • Age – wax gets harder and more difficult to fall out as we get older.
  • Use of earplugs and other things you put in your ear – these can push the wax further in.

Symptoms of ear wax build up:

  • Earache
  • Difficulty hearing
  • Itchiness
  • Dizziness
  • Ear infection
  • Sounds such as high-pitched tones coming from inside the ear (tinnitus)

Ear Wax Removal

Once ear wax is removed, these symptoms usually improve. If they do not improve, speak to your GP. In many cases, earwax can be treated by using an over-the-counter ear drops like Olive oil available at pharmacies including Whelehans. Using wax softening ear drops for 4-5 days can help soften and loosen the earwax. Patients may not need to remove the ear wax with their GP or audiologist if softening ear drops like olive oil resolves the issue.

Microsuction at Whelehans Pharmacy

Microsuction involves an audiologist cleaning the ears using a small instrument that sucks the loosened wax from your ear. It is a safe and non-invasive treatment. Our audiologist will recommend using softening ear drops like olive oil for 4 – 5 days prior to your appointment.
