How could the cannabis derivative CBD benefit you?

CBD oil now available from Whelehans Pharmacy

CBD or cannabidiol for short, is a chemical constituent of the cannabis plant made from Hemp. CBD oil can be legally sold in Ireland unlike its cousin marijuana (which is not legal). It is important to emphasise CBD oil is not marijuana and does not have the same effects. Marijuana contains both THC (tetrahydracannbinol) and CBD, and these compounds have different effects.

THC is psychoactive that give the “high” people associate with marijuana whereas CBD does not give a “high” associated with illegal varieties of cannabis. To explain is scientific terms, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive meaning CBD will not change a person’s state of mind.

Not a medicine

There needs to be more research done before CBD can be considered a treatment for any condition. Therefore, it is not yet licenced as a medicine in Ireland and is licenced as a food supplement rather than a medicine with the HPRA; therefore, it cannot be prescribed by doctors yet. Below is the list the benefits CBD is thought to have but more research is needed to prove these. It should never substitute conventional treatment with your doctor and always speak to health professional before using.

Benefits of CBD Oil:

  1. Natural Anti-inflammatory by preventing autoimmune response thus reducing inflammation
  2. Helps reduce chronic pain by reducing nerve signals.
  3. Help mood disorders like anxiety, depression and panic attacks through its effect on receptors in the brain.
  4. Help ease insomnia and sleep problems
  5. Helps ease Irritable Bowel Syndrome through a natural anti-spasmodic action
  6. May help ease seizures in epilepsy.

Possible side effects and interactions

Although CBD is generally considered safe, it can cause side effects like diarrhoea and fatigue, It may interact with certain medications so always check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking. It should never substitute medicine prescribed by your GP.
